Dirt, Rocks, and Recovery: What to Pack for Off-Roading Events
New to Off-Roading?
No worries — you don’t need to have everything listed above to join us. Many members are happy to help, share gear, and offer guidance on the trail. Focus on safety, bring what you can, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Our goal is to learn, build confidence, and have fun together.
Suggested Items for Off-road Events
Vehicle & Recovery:
Your vehicle should be equipped with basic recovery gear in case of common trail situations. This includes a properly rated tow or recovery strap, soft shackles or D rings, recovery gloves, a tire pressure gauge, tire deflators, a reliable air source such as a portable compressor, a full-size spare tire, and a basic tool kit with common hand tools.
Spare Parts & Fluids:
We recommend bringing essential fluids and small spare parts that can help resolve minor issues on the trail, such as engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid, extra fuses, a serpentine belt (if applicable), and trail-fix items like duct tape and zip ties.
Safety & Emergency:
For safety and emergencies, please carry a well stocked first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, a flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries, an emergency blanket, a whistle or other signaling device, and a reflective safety vest.
Navigation & Communication:
Navigation and communication items should include offline maps downloaded to your phone, a paper map as a backup, a phone charger or power bank, and a GMRS or FRS radio to stay in contact with the group when cell service is limited.
Personal & Comfort Items:
Personal essentials help keep you comfortable throughout the day and should include plenty of drinking water, snacks or trail food, weather-appropriate clothing, a hat, sunscreen, bug spray, and trash bags to pack out everything you bring in.
Optional Items:
Optional but helpful items include a jack suitable for uneven terrain and traction boards for added recovery capability.
